“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.”
~ William James
Life can feel like a balancing act, with constant demands pulling you in every direction. Whether you’re a parent juggling career and family, a student overwhelmed by school and sports, or an adult navigating the pressures of a demanding job, finding time for yourself can seem impossible. That’s where I come in. My focus is on helping you create space in your life—not by adding more, but by honing in on what truly matters. Together, we’ll develop practical strategies that allow you to thrive in a way that feels both manageable and fulfilling.
I understand the weight of high expectations, especially for women navigating the complexities of motherhood. For many, becoming a mother is not just a joyful milestone—it’s a period of significant change, especially when it comes to your relationship with your body, and with yourself. I know how the pressure to “bounce back” or meet societal standards can take an emotional toll. Whether you’re managing a career, a household, or both, the demands placed on mothers today are immense. I also want to acknowledge the demands placed on dads, too. Whether you’re a mom or a dad, my goal is to help you feel validated in these experiences, no matter how complex they may seem. Validation is often the first step in regaining your sense of self.
Hi there. My name is Theresa Schumaker, and I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to expand my clinical skills in various mental health settings. These experiences have afforded me the opportunity to learn evidence-based strategies to help clients feel better quickly. I have a particular passion for working with individuals facing eating disorders and body image issues. My time as a therapist in a residential eating disorder program has significantly refined my skills, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue offering support in an outpatient setting.
One of my specializations is helping women through the emotional and physical transitions that follow childbirth. Whether you’re working through body image concerns, adapting to new family dynamics, or struggling to find your footing, I’m here to help you rebuild a positive relationship with your body and feel more connected when life feels overwhelming. My approach is to help you find relief from the pressure to meet unrealistic expectations, focusing instead on what truly matters to you…we often refer to this as identifying your values.
In addition to my work with adult life transitions, I’m passionate about supporting both teens and adults who are struggling with eating disorders. Whether it’s anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, or another form of disordered eating, I provide personalized support to help you rebuild trust in your body. Living in a high-achieving community often comes with an expectation of perfection, and I’m here to help change your relationship with those pressures and learn to see your body as an ally rather than an adversary.
As an avid runner, I also have a deep connection with teen athletes. I understand the unique challenges that come with competitive sports and the intense pressure to succeed. My goal is to help teen athletes manage the stress that comes from balancing sport, academics, and personal life, while also addressing any perfectionism or unhealthy habits that may arise as a result.
I don’t employ a one size fits all approach. Instead, I adjust my skill set to best fit everyone’s needs and incorporate various interventions. I am trained in the following treatment modalities: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). While I have experience with these modalities, I remain committed to being a lifelong learner so I can continue to show up in the best way possible for my clients.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our family pets. We spend most of our time completing house projects, enjoying the outdoors, and connecting with family and friends. I am grateful for the opportunity to provide care for the surrounding communities where I reside. I welcome you in and look forward to meeting you soon.
